The cardinal tetra is a freshwater fish of the family Characidae of order Characiformes. It is native to the upper Orinoco and Negro Rivers in South America. Cardinal Tetras grow to about 2 inches (5 cm) in length, preferring temperatures between 73-80°F (23-27°C) and a slightly acidic pH of 5.0-7.0, though they are adaptable to a wider range if changes are made slowly. As omnivores, they thrive on a varied diet of flakes, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and pellets, requiring a planted tank with soft, low-mineral water and a minimum school of 5-6 fish for optimal health and vibrant colors.
