The Electric Blue Jack Dempsey (Rocio octofasciata "Electric Blue") is a stunning, selectively bred color morph of the traditional Jack Dempsey cichlid, known for its vibrant, shimmering blue coloration. It is generally less aggressive and grows slower than its wild counterpart.
Physical Characteristics
Coloration: The fish has a brilliant, uniform powder blue base coloration, often with black spots and shimmering highlights that become more vibrant as it grows.
Size: This variant typically reaches a maximum size of 6 to 8 inches (approx. 15-20 cm), which is generally smaller than the standard Jack Dempsey.
Sexual Dimorphism: Males tend to be larger than females and develop longer extensions on their dorsal and anal fins. Distinguishing sex can be difficult when the fish are young.
Care Requirements
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 55 gallons (approx. 200 liters) is recommended for a single adult.
Water Conditions: They thrive in stable, warm water with a temperature range of 76-80°F (24-28°C) and a pH of 6.5-8.0. They are sensitive to poor water quality, so frequent water changes are essential.
Diet: The Electric Blue Jack Dempsey is an omnivore and should be fed a varied diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, and frozen or live foods like bloodworms, mysis, and chopped prawns.
Temperament: While less aggressive than the original Jack Dempsey, they are still semi-aggressive and territorial, especially during breeding. They require plenty of hiding places using rocks and driftwood to establish territories.
