The Panda Cory (Corydoras panda) is a popular, peaceful freshwater catfish from the Amazon River basin in Peru. Known for its striking black-and-white markings that resemble a giant panda, it is a favorite for community aquariums due to its social, playful nature and distinctive look.
Key Characteristics
Size: Grows to approximately 2 inches (5 cm).
Lifespan: Can live 5 to 10 years, with well-cared-for specimens reaching over 15 years.
Appearance: Features a pale pink or off-white body with three black spots: one over the eyes (mask), one on the dorsal fin, and one at the base of the tail.
Behavior: Peaceful, bottom-dwelling, and highly social. They should be kept in groups of at least 6 or more to ensure they feel secure and display natural schooling behavior.
Aquarium Care
Tank Size: A minimum of 10 to 20 gallons is required.
Substrate: Use soft sand or very fine gravel. Their sensitive barbels (whiskers) can be damaged or infected by rough or sharp substrates.
pH: Slightly acidic to neutral, between 6.0 and 7.5.
Diet: Omnivores that scavenge for food at the bottom. Feed them a variety of sinking pellets, frozen or live foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp, and the occasional blanched vegetable.
