Description

"Spotted Furcata" is a common trade name usually referring to the Forktail Blue-eye Rainbowfish (Pseudomugil furcatus), a vibrant nano fish native to the rainforests of eastern Papua New Guinea. They are highly prized in the aquarium hobby for their "pom-pom" like yellow fins and striking blue eyes.

Key Characteristics
  • Appearance: They feature silvery-gray bodies with bright lemon-yellow margins on their fins. The pectoral fins are uniquely positioned upward, making them look like they are "waving" as they swim.
  • Size: A true nano species, they typically grow to a maximum of 2 to 2.4 inches (5–6 cm).
  • Behavior: Highly active, peaceful, and social. They should be kept in schools of at least 6 to 10 to reduce stress and see natural sparring "dances" between males.

Aquarium Care Requirements

Parameter  Ideal Range
Temperature 75°F – 82°F (24°C – 28°C)
pH Level 7.0 – 8.0 (prefer slightly alkaline water)
Tank Size Minimum 10–20 gallons due to their high activity level
Diet Omnivorous; thrives on crushed flakes, baby brine shrimp, and daphnia

Common Confusion

The term "Spotted Furcata" sometimes creates confusion with Gertrude's Spotted Blue-Eye (Pseudomugil gertrudae). While both are blue-eyed rainbowfish, P. gertrudae has distinct dark spots across its body and fins, whereas P. furcatus is known for its solid yellow fin edges and forked tail.
