The Royal Farlowella (Sturisomatichthys panamensis), also commonly known as the Royal Whiptail Catfish, is a striking, elongated freshwater fish from Central and South America. Unlike its name suggests, it is not a "true" Farlowella but belongs to the sister genus Sturisomatichthys.
Adult Size: Typically 6 to 8 inches (15–20 cm), though some can reach 10 inches.
Lifespan: Up to 10 years with proper care.
Temperament: Extremely peaceful and shy; ideal for community tanks with non-aggressive tank mates.
Care and Environment
Tank Size: A minimum of 30 gallons (approx. 120L) is recommended, but larger tanks (55+ gallons) are better for stability and movement.
Water Conditions:
Temperature: 72°F to 82°F (22°C to 28°C).
pH: 6.5 to 7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral).
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (2–15 dGH).
Habitat Setup: Provide driftwood and flat rocks for them to rest and graze on. They enjoy well-planted tanks with high oxygen levels and moderate water flow.
Dietary Needs
They are primarily herbivorous grazers. Their diet should consist of:
Algae and Biofilm: They naturally rasp these from surfaces.
Supplemental Foods: High-quality algae wafers, spirulina pellets, and blanched vegetables like zucchini, cucumber, and spinach.
Occasional Protein: Frozen bloodworms or brine shrimp can be offered sparingly.
Tank Mates
Best kept with other peaceful species like Tetras, Corydoras, and Dwarf Cichlids. Avoid boisterous or aggressive fish like large barbs or loaches, as they may nip the Royal Farlowella’s long, delicate tail filaments or outcompete them for food.
