The Denison Barb (Sahyadria denisonii), widely known as the Red Line Torpedo Barb or Roseline Shark, is a striking, high-energy freshwater fish endemic to the fast-flowing rivers of the Western Ghats in India.
Core Characteristics
Appearance: Characterized by a torpedo-shaped silver body with a bold black line running from snout to tail. A brilliant red stripe sits just above the black one, extending from the nose through the eye to the midpoint of the body.
Size: They typically reach 3.5 to 5.5 inches (9–15 cm) in length.
Temperament: Generally peaceful and social. However, they are extremely active and can become "nippy" or aggressive if kept in cramped conditions or without a proper school.
Lifespan: Usually lives between 5 to 8 years with proper care.
Aquarium Care Requirements
Tank Size: A minimum of 55 gallons (approx. 200 liters) is required for a small group. Because they are fast, open-water swimmers, a 4-foot long tank is often recommended.
Social Needs: They must be kept in schools of at least 6 or more. Solitary fish often become stressed, lose color, and may hide constantly.
Water Conditions:
Temperature: Prefers cooler subtropical waters between 15–26°C (60–79°F).
Oxygen: They require highly oxygenated, pristine water with significant flow, mimicking their native mountain streams.
pH: 6.8 to 7.8.
Diet: Omnivorous and opportunistic. They thrive on a mix of high-quality flakes/pellets, bloodworms, brine shrimp, and vegetable matter like algae wafers or blanched spinach.
