The Auratus Cichlid (Melanochromis auratus), often called the Golden Mbuna, is one of the most striking yet notoriously aggressive fish in the aquarium hobby. Native to Lake Malawi, it belongs to the "Mbuna" group of rock-dwelling cichlids.
Key Characteristics
Drastic Color Dimorphism: This species is unique because the males and females look like "photo negatives" of each other.
Females & Juveniles: Bright yellow bodies with black and white horizontal stripes.
Mature Males: Black or dark blue bodies with electric blue or light yellow stripes.
Temperament: Extremely aggressive and territorial. They are often described as "terrorizers" and can dominate fish twice their size.
Size: They typically grow to about 4–5 inches (11–13 cm) in length.
Aquarium Requirements
Tank Size: A minimum of 50 gallons (or a 4-foot tank) is required to manage their aggression.
Aquascaping: They need a "rocky reef" setup with numerous caves and crevices to establish territories.
Water Conditions: They thrive in hard, alkaline water with a pH between 7.5 and 8.6 and temperatures of 75–82°F (24–28°C).
Diet: Primarily herbivorous grazers. Their diet should consist mainly of high-quality spirulina flakes and vegetable-based pellets.
