Description

The Albino Acarichthys heckelii, or Albino Threadfin Acara, is a striking freshwater cichlid known for its creamy white/pink body, vibrant red eyes, and long, filamentous fins, developing stunning orange/red hues as it matures, making it a popular, centerpiece aquarium fish that requires a large tank with soft, sandy substrate, driftwood, and hiding spots.

Appearance & Characteristics
  • Color: Pale body (creamy white, silver-pink, yellow) with shimmering scales; developing orange/red in fins and lips.
  • Eyes: Distinctive red or pink due to albinism.
  • Fins: Known for long, flowing dorsal and tail fin filaments (threadfins) that become more elaborate with age, especially in males.
  • Size: Medium-to-large, reaching 6-8 inches (15-20 cm).

Aquarium Care
  • Tank Size: Minimum 75 gallons for a pair, but 125+ gallons recommended for groups (5-8 is ideal).
  • Substrate: Soft, sandy substrate is essential for their natural sand-sifting behavior.
  • Decor: Provide driftwood, rocks, and caves for hiding and territory.
  • Water: Soft, slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0-7.5).
  • Tank Mates: Generally peaceful but can be territorial; keep with similar-sized, peaceful fish; avoid small fish they might eat.

Behavior & Diet
  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive, generally peaceful for a cichlid, but may show aggression during breeding.
  • Activity: Digs and sifts substrate for food.
  • Diet: Omnivorous; accept pellets, flakes, frozen, and live foods, plus vegetables.
