The neon tetra is a freshwater fish of the characin family of order Characiformes. The type species of its genus, it is native to blackwater and clearwater streams in the Amazon basin of South America. Neon tetras grow to a maximum size of about 4 cm (1.5 inches), prefer a stable pH of 6.0–7.0 and a water temperature of 22–26°C (72–81°F), and are omnivorous, eating flakes, pellets, and small frozen or live foods like daphnia and brine shrimp. They are peaceful, schooling fish that thrive in a planted tank and need to be kept in groups of six or more to feel secure.
