The black neon tetra is a freshwater fish of the characin family of the order Characiformes. It is native to the Paraguay basin of southern Brazil. They are often found in the aquarium trade, and a feral population has been established in the rio Paraíba do Sul basin due to the trade. Black neon tetras grow to about 1.5 inches (4 cm), thrive in temperatures of 22-27°C (72-80°F), prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH of 5.5-7.0, and are omnivorous, readily accepting flakes, micro-pellets, and small live or frozen foods like brine shrimp. They are peaceful, schooling fish that should be kept in groups of six or more in a community tank with non-aggressive species.
